Torque converter question

Does anyone know if a tourque converter out of an 82 240D would work on a tranny in a 79 W116 SD? Thanks.

i am going to take a stab at this and say no. i think they are different engines. the 240D has a OM616.912 and the 300SD has a OM617.950.

Kinda what I was thinking, just wanting to find out for sure. Thinking of buying a 79 W 116 that has a bad (i think) torque converter in it, who knows, the whole tranny might be shot. Do to the fact that I already have a tranny that I pulled out of a 240D, i thought that might be a cheap, easy fix.

i think it takes the rotational forces from the engine and converts them into hydraulic pressure. i think the inside of one resembles a paddle wheel that moves the hydraulic fluid.....gimme a sec...

How TC's work link

Picture two fans enclosed inside a housing. The engine is connected to one fan and the diff is connected to the opposing fan. One fan forces oil against the opposite fan and the opposite fan rotates.

It's basically a fluid coupling. At a traffic light, one fan can rotate slowly and the opposing fan just sits there stationary. Increase the speed of the engine driven fan and the opposing fan will move due to the increased force on the blades.

There is always a difference in speed between the two fans.........the engine fan is turning faster.........unless the vehicle is off road load (going downhill).

Best explanation I've ever heard, and it makes perfect sense. Nice of you to put it in Fan terms......

You get that with a manual transmission.

Just gotta make sure you don't get it flipped over, and get caught up in the blades.

Does anyone know what transmissions will work on that car? I'm assuming it needs to be a 5 cyl but what years would work. Thanks.

The OM-616 Transmission and converter will probably physically fit the larger 617 engine, but the the smaller engine's transmission may give trouble some way down the road, as it probably doesnt have the same number of plates in its clutches and wasnt really intended for the higher power rating of the 617.

But, I guess it should fit and be made to work, But for how long, Who Knows!

They are the same.

According to the EPC, the following vehicles have the identical TC.
Part # 722 250 16 02

I think RKOHUT is correct. I looked this up some time ago to see if the TC in the tranny in my 77 240D (eventually to become a stick car) would play in my 80 300SD and came up with the same answer.
