Yet another "sight unseen" ebay purchase

I know, but I had to have it. I've been looking for nearly a year for a nicer '87 300D, or 300TD, and hope I've found it.

After hours of conversations with the seller on the first day of his ad, I felt comfortable enough to paypal the money, now to fly over for the car.

One funny part of the story (so far) is that I made my choice partly on the photo on ebay, seeing it has euro-lights already. I find out that the euros aren't included, seems he had them removed a month ago and traded them for a set of DOT lights so he could have wipers. He didn't seem to understand the difference between DOT and Euro lights, sounds like a great guy though.

So, .... anyone want to sell a nice set of Bosch 124 Euro lights LOL?

I also sold my perfect spare blue dash on ebay last week, this one has a badly cracked blue dash. Bad karma? I hope it wasn't.

Anyway, I know it's a "crap shoot", but I've made my choice and paid my money, here's to hoping that it'll work out.

After I get the car, I'll be parting my old '87 300D, I'll be posting as I start disassembling it.

Photos of yet unnamed car

After as long as I've been looking, I hope this is the one.

I'll give this a try:

Good luck with it! I picked up a 95 E300 D on "bay, sight unseen. So far so good, although it needed a through "top end cleaning".

Hope you luck out with a fine motorcar there!

Nice purchase! Looks pretty clean, from those few pics

If your old 124 is tan interior, I might want some stuff.

It's home

Not without a long list of necessary repairs, I've been digging deeply into the spare parts around here.

Looked nice on Ebay, paid his $2600 BIN price, which I felt was fair if not a bargain.

Flew down, found the car to be less than perfect cosmetically and mechanically, so not a steal, but a really straight body, leather, good colors, and reasonable miles so I took it.

Drove home (1,000miles), the new front tires are now toast, toe-out destroyed them. No power (broken switchover valve), noisy LR wheel bearing, CCU turning on whenever it pleased, sunroof inop, driver's window inop, ABS light on, etc. The new "Bilsteins" are KYB, a dissapointment also, and the roof/hood/trunk were repainted (sun damaged clearcoat) and not perfectly. Still returned 30.8mpg for the trip at 75-80mph (no cruise control) so not bad, and no oil or coolant used.

The good is that there was a new CCU in the trunk, ABS sensors, new calipers/rotors/pads installed, new KYBs, new Goodyears, and new exhaust installed, new spare, about a dozen filters (fuel/fuel/oil/air), new window switches, many goodies in the trunk. In all it wasn't something that most car buyers would want; a car with this many issues, but for those of us who like tinkering anyway and want to start with a solid southern car, it's the next-best thing to perfect, a perfect project car.

Give me a month and with the exception of new paint, it should be about perfect, I'm pretty excited to retire the old one to parts.
