service schedule for differential fluid

I have an '82 SD with 106,000 miles. As far as I know the rear end differential fluid has never been changed. Is there a recommended service for this and at what interval?

when I bought my 1981 240D with a manual trans, I had the transmission and read end changed. That was last April 2006. I did keep an eye for leaks right afterwards. Never saw any leaks.

Just last week, I had the transmission and rear end changed again. Again, I check after a long hot drive and when I park in our driveway, I look for new leaks, and nothing. Diesel engine has a very slow leak, not much, and only need to use 1 qtr per 3-4 thousand miles.

I have a 1984 Isuzu P'up 2.2L Diesel, that I got new, and now has over 512,000. I have changed the transmission and rear end once a year and never had a problem.

I would say once a year maybe an over kill, but I would every two years.

I have to agree with odie, now would be good.

When my '91 was about 4years old I had the stealer change the fluid in the diffs. They told me that they don't ever change diff fluid, I had them do it anyway.

Although the fluid makes a pretty good lubricant for a very long time, and the magnet should collect any ferrous contaminants, moisture from condensation etc. will eventually get into the fluid. Pretty cheap, a small amount of fluid, I figure it's good for 4-5 years unless there's some reason that it might have gotten contaminated.
