85 300SD Front suspension shakes

When I get to about 55 mph my front end starts shaking. When I go faster its better but still shakes a little. Slower the problem is hardly noticable. Making sharp turns going slow or fast, sounds like drivers side front tire starts clicking. I put two new tires on the back and had the front two checked for balance. What could the problem be??? Is something broke. Should I stop driving it. thanks for looking

if balanced [and didnot throw/lost weight]
and no bent wheels [rotate to see]
jack up the car and try to shake the front wheels
top and bottom movement is ball joints if no side to side
if both wheel bearings is the most common cause
listen for clunking or other clues or try a pry bar to see movement

get the car on a rack

even an alignment guy at a tire store can give you some idea of what might be wrong. there are a lot of rubber bits that wear and go bad over time.

with the car on the rack it's time to start pulling, pushing and prying (fore aft, left right, up down) to see what has "play".

unfortunately everything in the front end impacts other bits, so one I would consider yourself lucky if it is one component you have to replace

Nota is right on, here are some things to consider

SERVICE INFORMATION

If a customer complains about steering and/or body vibration while driving (without braking) at speeds between 50 and 60 MPH, the cause(s) may be:

^ Road input (road surface imperfections)

^ Out-of-balance front or rear tires/wheels

^ Insufficient steering rack sliding force adjustment or ball joints

^ Tire flat spotting, belt damage, or cord separation

^ Excessive tire Radial Force Variations (RFV)

^ Inproper inflation of front tires or irregular inflation of Left to Right

^ warped rotors

I have that problem at about 70-80 mph... before that and after that it is smooth. That leads me to think it's a wheel balance problem... however I know I do need lower control arms. Does yours go away as you speed up or it gets worse?

Suspension

It would actually get better the faster I went. I had the back tires replaced and the front checked for balance and the problem was still happening. I just went today and got new front tires to match the back and the problem went away. So it was not a balance issue in the front but actually bad tires. I just bought the car not to long ago. I think the person who had it before let it sit on a flat tire for a while and gave the tire a flat spot. The car had a lot of cob webs under the hood and under the car, thats why I think it sat awhile.
