Another GloveBox Question

I saw this thread:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=181588&highlight=%22glove+box%22

But it doesn't seem to be the exact same problem.

This is for my 87 300SDL

The glovebox will pop open over bumps. The locking mechanism works fine. The spring is still on the locking mechanism / long metal arm. But I don't understand what is supposed to hold the plastic latch from popping up and over the catch on the glovebox frame (dashboard). I'd think there would be a spring to attach to it to hold it down except when you lift the glovebox handle. But I don't see where one would attach.

This is really hard to describe without my camera (which is down). I can't find any site which lists these parts for the glove box so I can see how the BLEEP this works.

The part number which holds the latch is 126 680 01 32. Maybe that's the whole unit, the latch-frame and the latch. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I'd hate to rig something that ends up breaking the latch, but I'm about willing to try.

Bill - see my post #10 on that message you refer to. My glove box door would pop open too, because the top of that plastic pin I refer to had broken off. There is supposed to be kind of an indent there to hold it in place.

Bill()C 04-29-2007 09:27 PM

If you mean the pin that's on the glove box / dash board itself... that piece is still in tact, but there's nothing to pull the latch back down onto that pin 'cept good ol' gravity... which sometimes isn't enough to overcome the force of a good bump.

So what I'm trying to figure out is what broke off the latch to keep it down unless you pull on the handle.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it, I wish that were my problem!

One side of my glovebox sticks out and leaves the glovebox light on when im driving around. Annoying at night. Is there a way to fix that? The screws that I assume you use to adjust how the glovebox lines up with the dash on both sides of the glovebox seem to have been sheared off from the previous owners... :

No Bill, I'm talking about the plastic pin inside the glovebox door that the metal spring goes around. The glovebox door has to be taken apart to see it.

Bill()C 04-30-2007 09:11 AM

Hmmm...I may have lost that part... I don't see it. My glove box is apart. I have a long metal rod from the handle to the latch that has a spring around it... that part works fine.

Does anyone know of a picture of this assembly anywhere so I can see what might have fallen out?

Thanks,
Bill

Bill, unless we are both missing the same part.....there isn't a spring to hold the catch down.

On another note, what I found wrong with mine, and this would probably apply to Ara T. as well, was one of the main glue block that holds the wood trim on the door had started to separate. What this does, is caused the door to not be sufficiently rigid and flexing of the plastic portion resulted in the glovebox door popping open all the time. Once I re-glued the wood, the problem went away.

Performance products 4 benz have replacement parts for the glove box. Or, Phil could probably order whatever you need. I got new parts for mine, and even though the parts I replaced didn't look too worn, the door now works perfectly.

sokoloff 04-30-2007 02:46 PM

Bill - the part I replaced was the inside of the glove box door. It was about $20 and has the part number stamped into it. The little metal spring on that piece fits around a plastic pin that has an indentation on it to keep it in place. If the tip of it is broken off like mine was, that metal spring won't work properly and the door may pop open on its own or it may not open at all. If you didn't know that pin had a tip on it, you would never know something was wrong. It took me awhile to figure out why it didn't work right. Maybe yours is okay.
