After adjusting my ALDA a couple of weeks ago, I had my '84 300D running very well; she was nice and peppy off the line...for a diesel. Now it seems that gremlins have snuck in under the hood and adjusted the ALDA back to its original position. Is it normal for this car to need several adjustments in succession? The fuel mileage also dropped along with the power curve, so I re-enriched the mixture to bring her back to life again. Am I going to face the prospect of continually adjusting this thing? Am I doing harm? Any help is appreciated.

mreid,

After adjusting the wastegate on the turbo, I needed to compensate for the extra amount of air being forced into the engine, so I enriched the fuel on the ALDA by adjusting the screw on top. This screw sits atop the altitude compensator which is fastened to the injection pump. There is a boost sensing line fed into it from the switchover valve on the firewall. I simply turned out the slotted screw (after loosening the locknut) carefully 1/4 turn at a time. Mind you, this is a fairly delicate procedure, because about 1 in 10 springs break without warning when adjusted. The locknut/screw assembly was shrouded with a rather flimsy plastic and tin cover, which I removed easily.
