i've got close to 625 out of a tank on a trip once. but i like to run around a while on "E". in the mazda i drove two days worth of driving on "E" before it started to sputter. i think it is all about the style of driving.

not valid. my gf & i drove INTO houston when the exodus began, then we were SMART enough to take back-roads on our way OUT. every once in a while, as we were cruising at 60mph alone, we would catch a glimpse of I-10 over a hillside. it was a parking lot. we even stopped in shiner, Texas and had a couple of free beers at the brewery and still beat some other friends back home to the austin area that took the route the government told everyone to take. hahahahaha. another funny thing about our choice of path...most of the roads we took had old signs from way back when that said "hurricane evacuation route".

My vote would be for a couple of gallons of canola or soybean oil. There's no smell, no fire hazard, and 2 gallons = about 40 miles. Once you dump the 2 gallons in, get to a filling station as soon as possible and cut it with 1/2 gallon of unleaded, then start looking for diesel.

My 300D runs great on a 80/20 oil/RUG mix, and the exhaust smells great, too.

I've run out before, so I carry diesel in the trunk now.

I normally go by the miles... and I did find out the hard way that my reserve light doesn't work.

My old rule was "this sdl will go at least 550 on a tank" - I'd sometimes take it up into the 580s and still have a gallon left when I'd fill it up...

Now here's the tricky bit.

I always fill it right up until I can see the fuel ready to spill over the neck of the filler, ALWAYS.

So why did I run out at 528 one night when that tank wasn't driven any differently than the others?

IDK... but I just carry 2.5 gallons of diesel in a Roundup container in the trunk, we've made a wooden box that goes all the way across the back of the trunk for keeping spare _____ in - Right now my trunk contains:

*2.5 gallons diesel
*2 qts Rotella
*1 qt ATF
*1 qt power steering (yes i know i could just use the atf)
*1/2 gallon mixed antifreeze
*1 gallon clear water(not drinkable, it's in a refilled windshield fluid bottle)
*jumper cables, wrenches, socket set, screwdrivers, rags, and a funnel

Just so I don't get rear ended and the other guy's engine catches fire, I'm good I'll get an approved fuel container "one of these days" - but we've stored gas and diesel in our basement in roundup, 2-4-d, whatever containers for years now with no incidents, those are good lids b/c they keep POISON in.

no, Not a valid arguement, they ran out of gas, not diesel. You could find diesel just about everywhere.

That could be........but if you are just sitting, shut the car off. It's not good anyway to just sit at idle

Older farm tractors (gas and diesel) indicated that 10 weight motor oil can be cut with kerosene for lube in extremely cold weather (Zero degrees). That's when men were men and bearings were bearings. Never used it myself, but old timers and the op manual confirms his story. Carry 2 gallons diesel, or buy some veggie oil at a grocery store. What about mineral oil from a drug store? Would that work??

Thats an unsual situation. In that case I have 3 six gallon outboard tanks sitting in the garage, I can carry an extra 18 gallons at least.

I'm with hatter on this. If I ever found myself in a Katrina style situation I would be going Mad Max style, with a pair of 16 gallon barrels (ATF bulk containers) that I'd load with fuel.

Answers to your questions

.
Hello Everyone

If there are no diesel stations around but I have a few quarts of motor oil in the trunk would that work in an emergency?

Yes, your car will run on most motor oils.

If near a store would some cooking oil like corn, sunflower or other work?

Yes your car will run on most all vegetable oils.

I have about 10 quarts of unopened regular motor oil about 10 years old. Would it make any sense to put some in the trunk for an emergency or just bring to recycling?

If the oil has not gone bad for any reason, it can be used for fuel.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your car can also run on most hydraulic fluids, and even on most flammable gasses like propane, or map gas, if it is metered into the air intake with an adequate amount of air.

I have ran diesel engines on all of these fuels, and I know from first hand experience they do work.

The only fuel I have used long term that I have mentioned here is vegetable oils. And I can honestly say I have had no problems running it.
The other fuels I have only used for short periods to see if they would work, or for testing.

Thank You
RichC
Have Fun !

Here's a good reason, sometimes you can get a leak from the tank. That happened to me. Or your fuel gauge could stop working or send you the wrong information. That has also happened to me.

New Rule:

I just read through this whole thing to see if the "newbie" would say thanks... or something even close to that, and nothing!

NEW RULE:

If you have under 1,500 posts

and you start a thread asking for help;

and a month later you still don't check in for answers or

say "Thank you for replying" somewhere along the way.......

You should be banned from the Forum for 6 months!!!

( 2-3 gallons of filtered WVO with standard diesel additives for blending have saved me from calling & waiting for help a few times before I fixed my F sender unit....)
I don't think a 5 gallon jug of unopened cooking oil would develop condensation sitting in your trunk.
