Short/Ground Problem? 87 300D

Hello again,

I've been spending more time on my Benz recently and been uncovering more problems!

I have a strange short/ground problem which I'm hoping someone has seen before.

With the ignition 'on', I can hear feedback through the speakers. If I put the hazards on, I hear more feedback clicking when the hazards click. The overhead console didn't work properly either. All the warning lights in the dash were dim (Except for the SRS). If I turn the wipers on, I hear a click through the speakers. Also, the radio is showing giberish (sp?) I cannot turn it on or off.

Also, when I have the hazards on, the rest of the lights in the car (ext. or int) dim slightly.

I traced my wiring diagram and found that all those components used W1, or the ground behind the cluster. After a monumental fight, I removed the cluster. For giggles, I tried to check out the problem again. Now it is gone.

Does this mean my cluster is shorted? Has anyone seen this before?

Mike

If you've got a bad ground *anywhere*, it will cause all sorts of electrical gremlins. The most common places being the cluster ground, the battery ground and sometimes the taillight ground(s).

Clicking...erratic oil temp, door locks but not always opens

Arrgh
I think I have some ground or other elec problem
Hoping the solution is not behind the dash
Just got the 83 500 SEC

Its a Euro
has an international battery

Battery was down because of storage
Guy I bought it from would start it with help of boost.

Once he got a shock

I charged the battery in the car when I got it to top it off.
I then read in the manual that its not a good thing to do with the battery connected.

Arrgh

I now have a clicking seems to come from dash when I open the door or press on the brake.

I also may have a engine running hot or possible guage problem
since the oil temp guage is a bit eratic
will dod up & then come down then do up in a few seconds.

The thermo was changed as it stuck
its still hot
I think he changes the sending unit today
but the car is still reading up close to 120

I was thinking maybe the clicking & the wierd guages could be related
maybe eevn the heat isn't as hot as it say.

I have seen the gas tank guage move a bit too
thats odd...

Enrigue has it & is trying to see why its running hot
but I was also hoping he could figure out if there is some electrical/guage problem

I'm hoping the battery charging didn't do it
but that wasn't all my fault as it also was done before I bought the car...

I also had trouble unlocking the drivers door.
The door wasn't close all the way so I lubed the hinges w spray lithium grease. Some got on the wires near the hinge that go in the door
I wiped it away gently but it seems the door not opening while I hear vacumn could be related to that as it started about that time...
Door locks fine though...

arrrrgh
Any ides/help would be appreciated...

Thanks

The clicking went away about 2 weeks ago
then the battery died.

I got a new battery installed yesterday & the clicking is back

Does anyone think it could have anything to do with the new battery install ground?

I doubt its discharging the battery as the battery did sit 2 years so was a likely bad battery
but just wondering if the guy hooked up the battery ground right

He broke the tip off the pos ground so he had to expose more wire
just wondering if it could be the cource of the problem?
