Hummmm when going over 40 mph

I have a slight hum in my 82 240d when going over 40 mph. It seems to come from the front right tire, although I can not tell for sure because I have to go over 40 to get the noise, and cant exactly get out and try to isolate the noise. It kinda sounds like a hum of having a very low tire, or something small "dragging" on the tire. Faster I go, louder it gets. At first I thought it was just how the 240's sound, but now im not so sure because the sound seems to be getting louder.

My assumption is the wheel bearings. Would this be a reasonable first step to replace?

A wheel bearing sounds likely, is it a "growling" sound? Have you checked to make sure the brake isn't dragging? Also, you can eliminate a bad tire by rotating the tires and seeing if the sound moves.

I had the same issue, but on the driver side. Replaced the bearing and races on both wheels since I had to be in there any way. Use a dead blow plastic hammer to pound off the hubs. The bearings are very tight on the spindle, at least they are on my car. I did not have a dead blow hammer and ended up buying new rotors. While disassembling the brakes I found a leaky caliper, so I bought remans for $49 each from O-reilly. Rotors, brake hoses, and the rest all came from Fast Lane. AutoZone stocks the Timken bearing and races, 11.99 each set. Last time I bought bearings you had to by the race separately. Not the case now!

Sounds good. Ill check on the bearings. Now, there are some other higher priority things I need to take care of on the car first.... am I going to cause any damage by waiting? Or is is the only issue that I will be dealing with the annoying humm sound? I dont want to cause further damage and or get stuck on the side of the road.

You do not want a bearing seizing up while driving. They are pretty much a do not wait too long item.

changing a spindle due to spun bearing is not fun.
I would check it out soon.
