Diesel Injection Pump W120.110 180D

I was wondering if someone could help me with a diesel problem. I was given a 1956 MB 180D that is in pieces after it was painted and the previous owner died. His widow gave me the car and wants me to try to put it back on the road. It has not been driven or started in a long time. I drained and cleaned filter in tank, cleaned little fuel filter on left side of engine, and the large fuel filter ahead of the injector pump was replaced and with the hand pump primed the system. Have good fuel flow to the injector pump. Car has glow plugs working but will not start. Dropping a little fuel down the carb/air-intake and it ran a little. I then removed 4 lines from top of injector pump and cranked the engine over with the starter - no fuel coming out. I then removed side plate of the injector pump and found that all lifters are working but on all four positions but the springs on #1, 2 and 4 they are not even toughing the lifters cams - they are in the up position - only #3 goes up and down with the lifter. Anyone have diagram or instructions on how to clean the injector pump. Thanks - Gert

Answer:

This should be one of these Chassis:

Chassis: W120.110
Engine: OM636.930
Model: 180D
Years: 1953-59

Chassis: W120.110
Engine: OM636.930
Model: 180Db
Years: 1959-61

A few tricks on this Diesel Injection Pump.
#1. Remove the injection lines.
#2. Remove all of the delivery valve pipe connections from the injection pump (don't mix them up).
#3. Remove the delivery valve seal, spring and pressure valve, (don't mix them up).
#4. Use an eye dropper to fill each delivery valve with Diesel Purge, cover the top of pump with a cloth, and let it soak 24 hours.
#5. Use a plastic probe to push each piston down, rotate the engine 1/2 revolution and repeat as needed, until they free up.

You must replace the delivery valve seals with NEW during reassembly.
The delivery valve pipe connections must be torqued down, I can't get the specification until Monday.

Hmm,--It doesnt sound good.....

Looks like the fuel pressure Elements are seized up, maybe from water ingress/moisture etc. Were any of the pump inlets or outlets open to the air for all those years of dis-use?-In humid/damp conditions, its amazing where moisture will get in....

If the 'cleaning/lubrication' recommended above doesnt free them off, they are probably shot and will need replacement, which is a specialised job as they need setting up after....

If you are in no great rush let them soak and replace fluid periodically. A week or more at temperatures 70 or above would help perhaps.

Wink

whunter - thank you for your suggestions and I have already done 1. Removed the injector lines, 2. Remove all delivery valves and they are labled. I will now do 3 and 4 and 5. I will order the seals from you when I see that I have made some progress.

Alastair - to answer your question - no the car was in a dry garage and the lines were all connected. The car was run about every months for about 6 years and then the battery went dead and the lady did not do it anymore. So it has been sitting for about 2 to 3 years. I will continue with the recommended solutions to break them loose.

I am not in a hurry but want to continue working on it but it would be nice to have the engine running again and then I would feel better spending some money on it to get it nice. Thanks for all the help!

I would like to post some pictures of my diesel injection pump to explain what is going on. I have completed most of the suggestion which included the fuel pump cleaning and it needed it - piston was stuck. I now runs freely and pumps fuel. I still do not get any fuel out of lines at the injection pump. Need some help with posting pictures here.
Thanks - Gert
I think I may have figured it out - lets see if we have pictures. Please notice that #3 lifter is up and all other are down yet the springs are compressed the same distance. On the other picture the brass fitting inside the piston is loose in #3 but solid in others. What is correct. Thanks again for any assistance.
