Question Diesel Purge Question-

Im about to diesel purge my car, that has no engine problems, as preventive maintenence. Kosher.

Anyhow. What I am wondering is, from all the experiences I've read, people put the draw line and the return into the same bottle.

Some say the return comes back dirty. Mine will, I am sure.

So why let it reuse the dirty?

When the engine has drained a single bottle setup- where has all that return line muck gone? back into the engine? does a prefilter really filter out enough?

Why not have 2 bottles a clean and a return- so as the dirty cannot be reconsumed by the engine in any way. Or perhaps a one bottle setup cycled thru completely and than a second after with seperate bottles.

Is this idea just a waste of diesel purge?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I'm not sure...but I've always woundered what's the difference between disconnecting the fuel lines to run 100% purge for a few minutes and just pouring it into the tank and burning it normally. The instructions say you can do it either way so what's really the diff...other than more work.

This is intended to maximize the amount of diesel purge that is being circulated through the pump and injectors. Without the return line going back to the source bottle, only a fraction of the diesel purge will be introduced to the system with the majority going to the return loop back to the tank. It is also standard practice to replace the fuel filters after the diesel purge procedure. The secondary fuel filter should not let any big particle past that could damage the system.

Here's what you do if it's so cold your diesel fuel gels. Smear some on some toast and stay inside until it warms up outside.

Agreed, I run two cans of purge, one catch "tank" and replace filters. Varying throttle.

there is certainly black gunk getting introduced into the system, but it's usually just soot, no large particles. use it all, put both lines into the bottle.

Im attempting to figure out what size hose/tubing I need for my 85 300d turbo. After reading an hours worth of different answers around the net, my brain hurts. I know know less than when I started.
Whats the id on the return and the in-line?
can I use cheapy tube or does it need a heat tolerance..

thanks....

(was pretty sure i had it figured)

I don't think heat resistance is necessary, just find something that fits the nipples, you will only be using it for a few minutes. Just be sure the DP doesn't dissolve your hose!

These engines recirculate about 15 x as much fuel as they use. This is so that the recirculated fuel can go through the main filter while the unrecirculated fuel only passes through the prefilter. All the gunk you are worried about should catch in the main filter before going into the bottle, so whatever gets in the bottle is so small it won't really make any difference.

Just go to the local parts store and get a few feet of 5/16 fuel line, only a couple of bucks

Just in case you haven't already found this site in your seach, check out the maintenance page at diesel giant. He has an excellant tutorial on how to do the diesel purge.

drive w/diesel purge

I was wondering what would happen if one were to drive around the neighborhood with the diesel purge bottle set up secured under the hood. I really don't like to rev my engine in neutral. I don't even like to let it idle in park or neutral. I picture things spinning around too fast in there...sort of like a MLB pitcher throwing a ping pong ball. Thoughts?

I found on my 83 300D that the two hose lines would not fit into the can at the same time. I ended up pouring the purge into a glass cup and shoving the lines into it. Had to have a friend start the car, but it worked really well. Car runs like a champ now.

use a 2 liter plastic juice bottle with a large cap. It will give plenty of room to drill 2 holes for the lines. Make sure you use bottles with the recycling triangle with a 1 inside, these will not break down from the diesel purge. I keep my setup on the top shelf for the next time I need it.
