Good idle speed for easy starting...85 300D
I have a problem with rough starting on my 300D when I set the idle speed to 750 rpm. It doesnt cold start easily until i have it set almost at 950 rpm.
Whats a good idle speed setting? I have a pretty decent IP , well tuned with new chain and readjusted valves. |

750 is the correct idle rpm. You may a faulty GP, easy to find with ohm meter.

yup, that's what I would say too. it's pretty easy to tell when a GP has gone out on my 617.

I agree. The SD idles at 723 rpm. It has no problems to start at any temperature.

This sounds like my problem! It kind of came on all of a sudden.
Must the glow plugs be removed to be checked, or can I just measure the resistance between the relay connection and the block where the GP is plugged into? That's what I did and they all seemed to be OK.

The idle speed setting doesn't make any difference on startup only after the engine is running. Most injection pumps (and I believe the MB pump) are at full fuel delivery during start up. In some cases the owners manual will instruct the owner to depress the go pedal completely before starting. This allows the pump rack in the pump to go to the full fuel position. As the engine starts to run the governor in the pump adjusts the fuel delivery.
