Fuel light

Once the fuel light comes on, how much is generally remaining?

If I remember right, my owners manual for my 81 300TD said the reserve light means there is something like 2.5 or 3 gallons.

I don't know if it is any different for an 87. Someone will though

One thing I've wondered about is whether the reserve light is connected to the same sensor that the gauge is on the 124. Sometimes when my fuel level gets down below 1/4 tank, my gauge will start jumping between 1/4 and R randomly. The reserve light doesn't light when the gauge is reading R which leads me to believe that the light is on a different sensor (or my gauge is messed up and not the sensor). I don't know that I've ever seen it on, but I've never been that seriously low on fuel.

End hijack

The reserve contacts are on the same sender. They close when the float is physically at the bottom of it's travel.
