sight unseen car (parts but runs) price?
Hey all,
I have a lead on a (80-83) 300DT that the owner wants to sell. He said it runs but is dog slow on a moderate hill by his house. Said the rubber is all shot and a touch of rust (not too bad, and I believe his assessment to be honest to his best guess). Here's the catch: the car was run for an unknown amount of time without coolant. Now the question: How much do you think the car would be worth, and do you think it could be gimped about ~400 miles (from Malibu to Sacramento)? Also, if the engine did not seize, could it be rehab'd to a runner without excessive cost (what kind of damage happens with minimal or no coolant on the 617?) -nB

$1 seems fair for what you describe.

Well--
Is everyone assuming that it's dog slow because a cylinder or two has lost compression?? That'd be my concern.. Overheating a diesel, seems to be a much larger sin than overheating a gasser.. I think it relates to the tolerances necessary to run such high compression-- but I'm probably dead wrong.. My little VW pickup blew a headgasket on the interstate, and pretty much comitted suicide.. I replaced the headgasket-- but still was unable to get a 'running' amount of compression.. It may have just taken out the rings, but I got the engine out, before my life had to move on.. It, and another diesel engine that also needs a rebuild sit at a buddys house.. Point is-- I'd compression test it, before giving them more than you think you can sell the thing for scrap for.. I'd also trailer it-- given the distance you're talking.. I think either way, it would arrive to your place under another vehicle's power..

Considering the distance, the perished rubber, rust, risk that the motor is shot, and the cost of getting there and bringing it back, I wouldn't give more than $200 for it, at the very most. Even if it was free, you'd be incurring a risk, and certain expense, to get it to Sac.
And that's if I was feeling very, very, lucky, and adventurous at the time..... and had a trailer.... That's just my unscientific, visceral and gut reaction.

Yeah, I was thinking about compression testing it and if the compression was good I'd make an offer, if it was bad I'd offer to tow it.
problem is I don't have a trailer (or vehicle worthy of towing it) hence the think I could gimp it. Ah well. Anyone in Malibu area that wants a parts car? -nB
