newbie oil question
hello all, i purchased a 97 E300D with 176 k on the clock back in february. what a fine vehicle. it is almost time to change the oil. going through the stamped maint. booklet, it seems the car has been on a steady oil diet of Castrol GTX 10 W 30 all it's life. there was an occasional chevron 10 w 30 oil change mixed in the history of the car but mostly it was the castrol gtx. should i stay with the castrol? thanks in advance jim

10 different people will tell you 10 different things about which oil to use. I personally believe you just need to use any diesel rated oil, and change it hot and often you will be good. I tend to stick to using one brand, not switching each time I change the oil to a different brand.

thanks for the input. i will be putting diesel rated oil in very soon. it seems to have been serviced with the castrol oil from a place in falmouth VA. Eurotech is the name. they changed oil on it from 29,530 miles thru 142,069 miles according to the stamps in the maintenance booklet. thanks again guys. jim
