HELP - Hard to shift 4-speed 300TD
I recently purchased a 1981 300TD that was converted to a 4-speed. About 1/2 the time shifting is smooth-when it's not, the symptoms are:
1. Can't get it into reverse (Gears are spinning). If the car is in reverse when I start it, it acts as if the clutch is not fully disengaged and tries to move backwards. 2. Difficult to get into 2nd and even harder to get into 1st (at a stop). No grinding (like in reverse) but just hard to make it go. Is this a bleeding issue? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

First, make sure that the trans is filled with ATF...not hypoid grease.
If that checks out then clutch dis-engagement is the problem..try bleeding.

I agree with the above.
Thick gear oil will cause all sorts of problems. It needs to be thin like ATF, 5W30 or 15W40 (Only if it's really worn).

Be sure and check the fluid level in the "aft" section of the brake fluid reservoir, then pull the fwd part of the driver side floor mat down and make sure the clutch master cylinder is not leaking. Feel up there for brake fluid running down the clutch m/s hard line. Check the clutch slave for leaks over on the passenger side of the bell housing.

Still nothing....
I checked the transmission lube and it was indeed ATF (Red anyway) and it was full.
I reverse bled the the clutch system twice. The first time the brake pedal pumped up tight and the clear fuel line I used was full of fluid all the way to the slave cylinder (the air went somewhere). I tightened the bleed screws and tried the clutch. Same thing-can't get it into reverse. So, I reverse bled again. This time the brake pedal wouldn't ever pump up tight (as if the fluid was flowing through the slave and back to the reservoir?)What's odd is that I didn't see any bubbles coming from the return line into the reservoir and the fluid level hardly dropped at all. When I get home I'll check the master cylinder closer for leaks. I didn't feel any fluid coming down the hard line however. Thanks for your input and I'll let you know how the m/c looks.
