Fan Clutch Repair. Any Success Story?

I just replaced my fan clutch which leaks silicone fluid (from my 87 300D). It is a BEHR with a 1998 date on it. I read that it can be repaired with 6000 cst or Toyota silicone oil. Has anybody done this successfully and long did it last? I was told that they are not worth repairing - just junk them when they failed!

a couple of members have injected the special fluid into them and reported succesfully restoring a thermo clutche to operation. I believe gsxr did one. Try using the search feature. Toyota sells the fluid
I used google and found something useful. http://zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/FanClutch/FanClutch.htm

I drilled and tapped a small hole here (red) to use as a fill hole. Remove the leaf spring thermocouple and there is a pin underneath. Remove it carefully and as you fill it will run out here. Makes it quick. ~2 yrs., so far so good. At ~$200 for your clutch; can't hurt to try.

I got the new beefier 606 clutch for my 602 - working fine so far and only $80 with delivery on ebay.

Thanks for the info everybody. The above link is useful. I will definitely try to refill mine. Is the Toyota 6000 silicone oil the one to use?

I refilled mine successfully. It helps to heat the housing with a hairdryer until bubbles come out and then inject the silicone as it cools. I used a small syringe, such as what people use to give infants and small children liquid medicines. It is a long slow process and you have to hold the syringe while the housing cools, but saving the money makes it worth the effort.
