Question Will a gas speedo work in a diesel?

One of my 124's needs a new speedo, it has a broken odometer. I can get a speedo for $25 from a gas 300E 124. My thoughts are that it would work as the rear end ratio and speedo drive gear in the tranny are not changing. What is wrong with my conclusion?

You're right, it will work fine.

I'm not sure. The rear gears in your 300D (2.65:1) are much lower (numerically) than a 300E.

That might be addressed by the speedo gear on the transmission end of the cable, and the speedos might be the same then.

Look at the small part number printed in white in the face of the speedo itself (not the cluster, just the speedo) and compare it to the numbers of your speedo.

What's wrong with your speedo?

If all else fails, I'm considering parting with my spare, ... I've grown comfortable with having spare parts around though.

I have 2 speedo's in the garage from 300 diesels, What part number are you looking for, if you want it, it's free. Chuck

The speedo will work but because the gasser uses a different rear end ratio, it will show miles and speed incorrect.

If it's not cable driven (I believe all the W124's are electronic), you can send it out to be reprogrammed to correct for your ratio.
