'80 300 SD...radiator

Any one know where I can buy a new, reasonably priced, or good used radiator, for my ‘80 300 SD? Last price I saw for new was $600 plus.

thanks
Bill

I have one that came out of an '82 123. Have pics, via regular e-mail only, PM me if interested. Will check new part #'s to see if compatible.

Nissen

I bought a Nissen brand over the Behr. 3 years later no problems in the texas heat. I was really money crunched at the time, but if I had to do it over again - probably do the Behr. Now when I see an open hood on a 126, that Behr label is one of the first things my eye sees. I know, I should get over it - the Nissen has been fine thus far.

The ‘80 300 SD was the 116 body not the 126 therefore can’t use that or the one for the 123 body. Wish I could. They can be had for around $200, as I remember, where as they want $600 plus for the 116 body radiator!

Hopefully somebody will be able to help.

You are right about that, just another "senior moment" on my part, sorry.

I’ll do some checking on my end and get back.

See you also have a ‘80 300 SD. Do the two radiators look identical?

thanks

I have one that I just removed. I can let you have it for $50 plus shipping.

It will probably have to be recored or at the very least cleaned.

Recore

I have the W116 chassis, just like you. I looked around for awhile for one for my car and never found anything, instead got a local shop to recore mine for ~$250.

Ether, why did you remove it? Was there a problem with it?

I appreciate all the replies. I’m getting ready to paint mine and thus have the car all masked off, therefore will probably be several weeks before I can get an answer on the recore possibilities.

thanks
Bill

My car had been running hot for a while and I found some cool spots on my radiator so I figured a new one would be the ticket.
Like you, I found new ones to be very expensive so I opted for a used one which I took to my local radiator shop and had cleaned and painted. By the time I swapped it out it was well into fall and the fact that the engine ran cooler was perhaps due more to the outside temp than an efficient radiator.
Although, by the time it got really cold here I was having the opposite problem, the engine would not warm up to proper operating temps. Turns out my tstat was stuck open, so I swapped it out for a new one this spring.
When warm temps arrived this year and my engine temp once again ran warmer than I liked I finally just took my original radiator in and had it recored ($250) and put it back in the vehicle. Car still runs warmer than I would like under AC load (90 degrees C) but better than when I started all this nonsense.
So I've made a short story long but the gist of it is that the used radiator I bought last summer is now out of the car. I never had it flow tested and won't claim it to be anything other than used in unknown condition.

I've got one. only problem is it's in NOLA and I'm in NYC at the moment.

Worked well before it was pulled from the car but could probably use a flush...we've had about 5" of rain since it was pulled .

Ether and Shadows, I thank you both for getting back to me. As soon as I can get mine to a recore shop, I’m going to see what they have to say. Then, I’ll get back to both of you.

Shadows, why don’t you send me some info on what your parting out and prices, if possible. My address: wjob811@bellsouth.net

thanks
Bill
