Manual transmission rear end ratios

Today I put together a spread sheet to help me decide what ratio rear end I wanted to use in my turbo 240D. I was originally planning to go with the 3.07 from a pre '85 300D turbo, but it looks like 1st gear with that rear will be even lower than starting out in 2nd with the 3.69 I have now. It also looks like the 3.46 from a non-turbo 300D will only drop me about 200 RPMs at 70, which hardly seems worth the trouble of swapping it in. Guess I'll stick with the 3.69 and keep my eyes out for a 5 speed.

You guys with manual swaps in your turbo W123s must be really slow off the line or really hard on your clutches!

many will disagree.. but say the 3.07 to the manual 617.95x.
hooking up a 3.46 to the 616 manual.. the 3.69 is near useless.

I really wish MB made a W123 compatible diff in the 3.2x or 3.3x range to bridge the 3.46-3.07 canyon.

The 3.69 sucks in 1st because you revv up so quick the turbo has no time to work.
The 3.46 really isn't much of an improvement if you sit down to compare the speed vs RPM numbers. About 200rpm lower cruise and 3-5mph higher shift points.
The 3.07 will suck even worse than starting in 2nd with the 3.69. It would be useless if you have any passengers or a trailer.

No kidding about the "slow off the line"! I hold up traffic more than anything with it. I'm only at 12mph by the time I'm ready to shift into 2nd.

These charts should come in handy.

Ive got 2.88 so moving to 3.07 will be quite an improvement I think. I am burning up my clutch way to fast.

You nailed it. Too bad there is not a 3.25 or something. What did the 280s have?

I believe they used the 3.58.

The 2.88 is not on there because it was only used for one year and only in the USA.

I doubt it would last to 200k+ miles like it can with the 616.

I think it has glazed a bit already Pulling out of drive way and underground parking at work takes alot of free wheeling

Why not put some larger diameter tires on there? You could goto a 15" for anywhere from $200 to $500, and improve handling (and appearance IMHO) too.

the 280 came with a 354 i believe. and i have a spare one. it might be perfect for the 240 turbo.

New info!

The 1981 380SLC used a 3.27 diff. I wonder how rare it is since the USA received it with a 2.47.
