CV boot install tool (proper use) ??

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone has used a tool such as this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3AEOIBSAA%3AUS%3A11&viewitem=&item=250110753632

I have been trying to get the stock boot to stretch to the end of the cone and just can't get it there... ANyone have any pointers or proper procedures I should follow?

I called a local shop and they use the same damn cone type thing and just push it over, he says..... Well "what the hell" is what I say.....

ANy help is appreciated, I want to get these axles back in there already!

Cheers!

cv boot

Check out the pictorial here. http://www.dieselgiant.com/mercedesaxleshaftbootreplace.htm.

Hope this helps. It was a bigger job than I wanted to tackle so I took my 240D to my local garage and they ended up replacing the axles with new ones complete with boots. I guess they didn't have the tool.

Good luck.

John

The tool you referenced with the LINK comes with it's own boot....for a reason. These aftermarket boots are way more elastic than the stock boots. Rubber/vinyl technology has come a long way since our rubber boots were originally specced out.

If you use a new FLEXX type boot it will go over that tool, perhaps; but our thick rubber MB boots lack the elasticity to make it.

I have an earlier version of the Flexx gun shown on DieselGiant's site and I half-heartedly tried an old MB boot for kicks, and split it in a moment. It was old and I was just fooling around, but I doubt it would fly, even if new.

You need the new flexible boots made for those tools I think.

Don't return them yet, just because of what I've found. Heck, according to my kids, I'm wrong most of the time. With enough Sliglide and force, they may slip on.

Someone on the forum tried NEW MB boots with the air tool, though, and had them tear also. I'd wait for a few more folks to chime in before you write it off.

Red face well....

Well I tried them , (the MB boots), with my tool and they will not stretch past the 3/4 mark of the cone tool.. Trust me I muscled that puppy with LOTS of force and lube!

ANyhow, I tried the boot that came with the cone tool and it stretched with ease.... Too bad I tore it since I was so impatient and a Noob... Well Im gonna pick up 4 new ones tomorrow or have them shipped as I now know the MB rubber ones simply are not made to stretch. (I think they were made for a full rebuild)

Cheers!
