IIRC, it means Reserve. Same as E on American cars.

It also means

RUCKWARTS sorry, still don't know how to do umlauts yet on my non enhanced keyboard.

'Backwards' --as in the direction you need to go to get to the last gas station you just passed.

Hold down the "Alt"-key and press:

0196 for Ä
0228 for ä
0214 for Ö
0246 for ö
0220 for Ü
0252 for ü
0223 for ß

Works with Windows XP, probably with other versions as well. If not, you can always substitute with ae for ä, oe for ö, ue for ü and ss for ß.

I can't remember the exact spec, but you have around 2 gallons left in the system once you hit "R"eserve.

It stands for "low fuel light is going to light."

It depends

There seems to be a good deal of car-to-car variation in how much fuel is left in the tank at "R". At the "R" mark, my W123 car's 21 gallon tank will take about 15 gallons. The last time I waited until the light came on, it took 16.4 gallons. I'm not willing to drop the fuel level lower 'cause I've not yet pulled and cleaned the screen and don't know how much crud there might be in the bottom of the tank. (I'd like to think that a year's worth of B100 has cleaned it all out but that's probably wishful thinking.)

Assuming that it works, the low fuel light is more consistant from car-to-car than the needle position near R.
