Loose steering

I have play in my steering wheel (85 190d). We checked out all the ball joints and various bushings and have decided the problem is the steering box. Does this model have an adjustable steering sector? The Haynes manual doesnt mention one. Or is this the steering coupler's fault? Thanks!

Before adjusting the steering box you first need to check/replace steering linkeage, steering arm, steering gear, both companion plates of bottom steering shaft and bearing play of front axle. This is straight from the manual, section 46-110.

The manual says max steering wheel play is 25mm. Which is just shy of 1 inch. This is checked at the steering wheel.
You do not want to remove all looseness you just want to tighten it up. The manual does not provide a mimimum amount use your own judgement on this.

Tools you will need:
19mm box wrench
6mm allen key
19mm socket with a minimum of 15" extension and a breaker bar.

Prespray with PB Blaster 1 day in advance.
Unlock locknut on top of steering box with ratchet/breaker bar and extension. Just loosen it a little.
Hold locknut with box wrench and adjust with 6mm allen key.
Turn counter clockwise to tighten steering.
Turn 1/8 inch at time and check play. Mine only needed 1/4 inch turn and the results were very noticeable.
