Question K-1 Kerosene, $2.59/gal....was wondering....

Folks,
I went to town yesterday and noticed that the price of K-1 Kerosene has not increased ($2.59/gal)...yet!!! I am aware that Kerosene does not have the lubricity that diesel fuel does....but I got to thinking, I have burned bio-Diesel as B50, mixed with LSD......I got to wondering if anyone has experimented with Kerosene and bio-Diesel mixtures/blends.....??

I also realize that K-1 probably has not increased in price because of demand and the fact that it carries no road taxes....BUT.....it isn't dyed either.....so perhaps the next time I go to town and purchase some Diesel to blend with bio-Diesel....maybe I'll just buy a 55 of K-1 instead......

whatchall think??

SB

I use a simple viscosity test to mix Kero and SVO. This SVO gives the Kero the lubrication needed and the viscosity test thins out the oil to the consistency of diesel.

All the kerosene I've come across lately has been dyed. IMHO, the fine for running "detectable" untaxed fuel isn't worth the savings.

Buy a one quart funnel with a small neck. Take one quart of diesel and time how many seconds it takes for the diesel to run through the funnel. Thin your vegetable oil with Kero until you get the same run out time as the diesel through the funnel. The ratio's differ with oils e.g. Peanut it thicker and Cotton and rapeseed are thinner. Simple but effective

Where did you find the K-1? I can't find it for less than $5 to $7 per gallon.

I passed several Sheets stations, Shell branded K-1 was the same $2.59 at 3 different locations........I don't generally deal with them because they don't sell Diesel....go figure???

fwiw, there is a local company here www.gentcorp.com that is patenting their BD mix as BD123, 1 part K-1, 2 parts soybean, 3 parts canola. So 1:6 is their ratio.

BD123 for your W123. I like it!

Unless the spec has changed, K-1 is "drinking water clear". I use it, seldomly, in my kerosene heaters. I think a dye would mess up the wick.

Exclamation I was asking about a K-1 / Bio-Diesel blend.....

By my way of thinking.....B-100 (bio-Diesel) is the same regardless of the source of the "BIO"......and it's viscosity should not be an issue when blended with K-1.......

and as B-100 has a far greater lubricity factor than ULSD .....so it should be a "natural" to blend B-100 and K-1......I just don't want to ruin a relatively stock OM 617.952......and if I used my tractor as an experimental platform, it would take years to produce any noticeable result.....for the amount of hours that it gets annually......

SB

I have to drive over 100 miles (one way) to the closest B-100 retailer....and am presently out and burning "pump" ULSD......so I go in my 'ol F-150 gasser, and fetch 110 gal of B-100......and I also have been fetching 55 gal of ULSD and blending it 50%......intending to go to B-66 this summer....then I hot on the K-1 idea....

K1 is a near-perfect mixing stock for biodiesel. Bio provides all the lubricity you can use, and K1 is much better at cold temperatures. The only drawback is that K1 contains less energy, and you will see less fuel mileage.

What % blend would you recommend??

How much of a falloff in mileage?? I'm getting around 26 +- mpg on ULSD...

Thanx

That's all I use K-1 for....so far....fuel for my back up heater and for parts cleaning......and it has always been "Vodka' (or Gin) clear....

It was kero, and it was red.
