Going to do a brake upgrade, so...

Hey guys! What's up?

I'm thinking of doing a brake upgrade to my w123, using late w126 rotors and caliper. I already did some research of the pros and cons of doing this.

I already have the w126 Ate calipers. Now I need to buy the rotors, which I would like them to be drilled/slotted. Any good source to buy high quality rotors?

Thanks!

Soon to be installed: Bilstein HD, R107 front discs and 4-piston calipers, HD Suspension springs, wagon front swaybar.

BTW, I know my hubs won't perfectly match the front disc, according to Omegabenz. In which way they don't perfectly match?

I have heard no such thing, the only thing is that you will want the dust shields and backing from the 126. The 126 rotors were vented, not slotted or corss drilled. I don't know that there is enough metal to ahve the modified. They will also not help with stopping, only help keep the brakes cooler during heavy repeated braking.

I don't think you want that. Unless you like replacing rotors for fun. Drilled rotors form stress cracks rather quickly and you'll have to replace them every few months.

Ok, I see the point about the drilled/slotted rotors. I thought they might help reduce pad noise. I use Ate brake pads and after a few months they start making noise when you brake.

Winmutt, I recall reading a post from Omegabenz where he mentions that late w126 discs don't match perfectly with the w123 hubs. Something about the rotor hat and the hub no aligning perfectly... Not sure about that though...

I had considered doing it myself and may still for the TD but without additional pody weight there is no real reason to..... Now if someone can point me to some dual caliper OEM calipers that will fit, then we are talking!

I'm always wary of brake upgrades, especially using components designed for a completely different car.

I feel you'll upset the brake balance, and could create problems for yourself in an emergency. I may be wrong though, the brakes could be perfect for your car.

Food for thought.

the early 126 vented rotors are the same diameter as the solid 123s and use the same pads, so they cannot upset the balance. this will not give additional stopping power but will reduce fade and the rotors will be a lot less likely to warp.

i had a lot of trouble keeping rotors on my 300td (they kept warping) and i think the wagons will benefit from the vented rotor upgrade because of their extra weight.

Bah get the Zimmerman X drilled rotors, or the ATE slotted ones.

The ATE's are great so are the Zimmerman's. The only down side of the drilled rotors is that they make some noise when you hit the brakes. They make a zipping noise because of all the holes, its not annoying its just something they do.

Just get normal brake discs, the cross drilled ones have less metal to absorb the heat from the braking. Race cars only use them to save on unsprung weight.

Otherwise its just bling...no kidding.

Fastlane sells them, look them up online or give Phil a call. About $90 each, they are the most expensive rotor you can get for the W126.

About braking balance, do you guys think it would be better that I stick to the brakes of an early w126 or will it be ok if I use the larger discs from a late w126?

I think the larger late 126 rotors require late calipers and larger wheels... don't forget this.
