so i cant get the hubcaps to fit

i bought 4 hubcaps from ebay/forum members and got the paint stripped off of them. i will repaint them when i have the money do get a factory quality paint job, and so they are just shiny with no paint. well i cant get them to fit. it seems like my current rims stick out to far to let the clips attach. it is like this on my 80 240D(with chrome bundts) and my 85 300D(standard bundts) they are the right size (14") so i am just wondering how they are supposed to fit.

thanks for any help.

You mean the regular hubcaps with painted ring around the MB star? Those were not meant to fit over the bundts and I don't know that they would fit, they were intended for steel or alloy steel lookalike rims. If you are looking to get rid of the bundts, you will also need to change the lug bolts for the other rims. Bundt bolts are longer and hit into the brakes with other rim types. Bolts for steel or imitation rims are too short to get a safe thread with a bundt rim.
My 80 has the alloy lookalike steelies on it with hubcaps.

A few years ago when I was first getting into these cars I swapped from alloys to steel rims on my 240. I used the lug nuts from the alloys and couldnt figure why the wheel would only turn so far then hit something and stop. I shudder to think what woulda happened if I would have just jumped in the car and took off.

Yep. Find some steel wheels (or the rare aluminum equivalent) and a set or shorter lug bolts.

Wrecking yards are a good (and affordable) source. This reminds me, I've been meaning to go look at the 82 and see if it has the real or fake steelies on it too...

Edit: Ooh! it does have the alumasteels, oh joy oh joy! I like being able to carry tires with 2 fingers
