1990 300D Issues

I think the timing chain broke on a friends 1990 300D 2.5 with 270K miles. How much would a cylinder head and injector pump cost for this car?

Easy enough to check - pull the valve cover.

A broken chain will likely bend valves but it shouldn't damage the IP.

I don't see 2.5 parts often in the parts forum so try www.pgauto.com for an estimate. A good used engine is probably in the $2000 range which caps the labor you should spend/expend getting a damaged engine back to snuff.

I haven't seen it yet. It was basically explained that he was driving along and the car just stopped running. I assume that it lost fuel, but what could be the worst case senerio?

There was a recall or advisory on the timing chain of early 300D 2.5s.

Worst case is valves, head, pistons and cylinder walls cannot be salvaged.

Is there a chance that it could be computer related? I did a search on ebay and found this item. Are the injectors electronically controlled or pop actuated?

How do you pull engine codes off this car? Is there a simple jumper you can insert and pull codes off the number of flashes?

I hope to get a chance to check it out on Monday. Stay tuned!

Is the 2.5 cylinder head interchangable with the 87 turbo or other 2.5 190D's?

The computer only controls idle, boost and emissions devices. If you remove the battery with the engine running, it'll keep running. You'll probably fry some electronics but the car will chug along.

The cylinder head should be interchangeable with the 190D 2.5 turbo which is a rare beast. Probably with the 190D 2.5 as well but the valves might not be up to turbo duty. The 87 300D has a 6 cylinder engine. That means it won't fit

How long ago did the engine quit?

I don't know how to pull DTCs. Send a message to gsxr. In fact he'll tell you all about the timing chain advisory.

Nope, it's all mechanical injection. Disconnect the vacuum hose to the shutoff valve, turn off the key, and you'll see what I mean. The idle speed is controlled by the computer, but that's just about it on the fuel side. The computer also controls the turbo boost and will cut boost when it sees a problem somewhere. It will not prevent the car from running.

To pull the codes, you need to build a simple circuit with $20 of parts from Radio Shack. Schematic here (go to bottom of page). Take the cover of the diagnostic connector near the positive post of the battery. Plug the test lead into port 4, and the ground into port 1. Then connect the +12V lead onto the positive terminal of the battery. Press the button for two or so seconds; the LED will flash a number of times. I can get the referece page if you need it so you can know what they all mean. After reading and writing down a code, hold down the button for 8-10 seconds to clear it. Each code must be cleared individually. A single flash means there are no fault codes stored. With the engine off, you'll always get a code 9.

Not sure if the head is interchangable. I would guess not as the engine numbers were different. Although I seem to remember seeing somewere that the 603.970 heads work on 603.96 blocks...so I'm not positive.

Update.
Timing chain not broken! Looks to be a fuel delivery problem. He explained to me that he's tired of all the problems with it and decided to sell it to me.

I'm towing it to my garage this weekend! How much do these go for? I haven't seen many for sale. It has a white exterior with blue MB tex interior.

Anyone have stats on this car? MPG, 0-60, fuel tank size?
Please let me know.

A properly running example will get you a reliable 32mpg on the highway, with about 30mpg in the city. 0-60 should be around 12 seconds. With no boost (like if the EDS is having a fit), you'll get a 18-20 second 0-60. The fuel tank is 18.5 gallons, plus I believe a 1.8 gallon reserve (or something like that). They're great cars when running correctly. In my opinion, they're the best compromise in an MB diesel save the 98-99 E300 and any CDI's...great fuel economy with decent performance in the 124 chassis and no major mechanical defects like with some variants of the 603 engine.

Update`

Running!
Changed out the filters, and swapped in the battery from my 1984 300D and it fired right up!

It has a miss which I hope to cure with diesel purge and new timing chain. I discovered that the oil cooler was destroyed and leaking bad. Also the exhaust is trashed.

So it beings!

Blow by, Yuck!

Fitted a 3 foot section of heater hose to the ends of both oil cooler fittings and started the car. Ran but with a lumpy idle. I pulled the oil cap off and smoke shot out as if it were the tail pipe.

Anyone know where I can find a 2.5 turbo engine in the north east? Are there engine build kits available? I can't find pistons or rings available on the net!

Thanks
