I have the car apart on the hoist attempting to replace rear wheel bearings and check CV joints, simple, right? I can't see how to get the hub off to get at the bearings and can't remove axle without taking off hub. Can someone explain the the procedure??? Thanks! Cheryl

Well, that was either a really stupid question or else NO ONE knows how to do it. Anyway, I figured it out - all by myself. Got hub off and bearings out, checked CV joint and car is back on the road. Thanks Cheryl

I saw your post but did not know if my 82 300D was like your car or not. I was able to replace my drive axels but not my wheel bearings. It appears like a rather difficult job. (I replaced a pair of hubs on a 76 vette and don't ever want to get into that again.) Do you know if the SD and W123 have the same rear wheel bearing assembly? If it does would you now let me know how you replaced yours? Thank you.

Rick, hubs are removed with "special tool" from the rear of the hub after you take drive axels out. Same as what you use to remove hubs from 4WD vehicles. Come in different sizes and just happened to have the right one. Don't know if your car is the same, though. Everything else on these cars is so simple and straight-forward I was stumped at first when I took the wheel apart. Thanks for replying.

I noticed the nut and considered buying the castle socket to remove t but others said that removing the hub and replacing the bearings in the hub is a major job so I wimped out. Did you find pulling the hub and replacing the bearings in it to be a major job? Thanks for your reply.

nah, no more a pain than other bearings. If you don't want to attempt yourself just take hub off and take to shop and have someone more familiar with the procedure take old out and put new in. I like to do those things myself, unless I can watch, on account if the seal gets messed up or something then I know it - I don't like to take someone else's word. Cheryl
