How to break the ignition?
I have a 1979 300d. The ignition has begun to give me trouble. The key used to just stick but turn after one or two attempts. That was until last week when my partner and I had our bags and tent packed for a camping trip and the key just wouldn't turn. I tried for 30 minutes. My dad suggested I spray wd-40 into the ignition. I tried that, and after a few attempts at turning the key, it went. That was enough to get it home. Ever since it as been back to working on the first turn most of the time, but obviosuly I need to do something.
I am an absolutely broke college student. I know this is horrible conventional car maintenance, but for the time being I would rather just use a screwdriver to start the thing than not be able to use it at all. How do I make this so? I've read something about drilling out the ignition. Is that advisable? Any help would be appreciated. |

Do a search on it there is a lot of stuff on that. If you can get the key to turn once more you can remove the tumbler with a paperclip.

Just dealt with this to some extent
I see you have a 79, I do too. And my ignition was an earlier type than most out there. Here are a few links that may be helpful. The DG pictorail is for the later type , but there is still a lot of good info there. also search the DIY section. hope this can help!
