85 IP timing? Should I just let a shop do it?

So I am reading up on the 85 which clearly doesnt work by the Baylor/Easley method listed. For starters I went to Ace and got said wrench. Good waste of $15, the rack travel sensor completely obstructs the top engine side bolt. The 45' bend is in no doubt required to do it right. Either that or remove the rack sensor. Sugg?

How much should an indy run me?

I will be doing it via the drip method. Thanks for the link. However this still does not resolve this issue for me :

from article

I've attached mine with arrow to bolt... The rack sensor completely blocks any easy access....

Will a socket and extension reach it from the back of the pump?

I tried that route as well, however I just read that a wobbly + ext is the way to go. We shall see in the AM

Two U joints got me there. Totally disapointed. Timing was more or less spot on, maybe 1 deg off. GRRRRR. I want my car to perform like the other cars I have driven, can precombustion chambers really make that much of a difference? I have a set of injectors I am about to send off have rebuilt. If that doesnt solve the problem I have to move on to the PC's I suppose. Originally with the Baylor/Easley method I saw 10' difference... I was all excited that this might at last be the solution to my problem..... Nogo ...

I should do mine soon... My timing is really retarded.. currently close to 22, going to set it to 26. Need to obtain some of those flex joints and more extensions tho. How hard is it to move the pump after its been loosened?

It all depends on whether you loosen the one bolt at the very bottom of the IP in the rear. If you do, it moves easily. If you don't.........it won't.

How did you measure your timing? To get to the rear bolt I removed the coolant line and the linkage to the VCV.

BC: Does the linkage to the VCV do anything other than modulate for the transmissions? I left the linkage off since I went to the manual tranny in mine.

I did it by the drip method. Only without unbolting the pump, don't have the tools to do it..

That's it. You don't need it for a manual.

All you need is a U joint or 2 for the eng side IP bolt. the other 2 front ones are easy. the rear is 13mm LONG which was $6 and change at AZ

Not really much need to mess with the PC's. Unless it's got physical damage such as a crack, piston contact, melted, or ball missing, they don't wear and you would just be wasting $10 worth of seal rings.

#4 and #5 are missing their balls I should have looked when I pulled #3 today. Are the balls that crucial?

Yes, extremely important. They are what atomizes the fuel.
