my 87 is 100% leak-free, but it is well-cared for. the other 87 leaks like crazy and it obviously has been neglected.

My '77 is raining fluids of every kind, and it's rather unpleasant to spend time beneath it, since avoiding the drips are impossible.

So far I've noticed a good dribble from the lower oil cooler hose, and something like a stream that pours forth from the vicinity of a nasty looking hose connection beneath the air intake. (I'm afraid to know, but will investigate further the next time I work on it.) I also noticed tranny fluid dripping from the cover over the torque converter, and the retarded Chrysler-designed ACC servo makes for a nice coolant rain shower that never fails to miss an eye or an ear while crawling around beneath the car. Every injector return line is also leaking diesel, as well as the primer pump.

So many leaks... So little time to fix them! Argh!

The old injector return lines on my '99 were dripping diesel adn causing the injector wells to fill up, then overflow all over the intake side of the block, including the glowplugs.....
I fixed the problem, and never had a leak since.

Give this guy a Land Rover and a 740iL, he'll wish he had simple & cheap 20-year-old Mercedes Diesel leaks.

My '87 190DT leaked, low oil sensor, simple fix.
My '87 300D (blue) leaked PS fluid when I bought it, PO filled the reservoir to the top.

Neither of my '87s leak anything anywhere at this point (knocking on wood) running ULSD and synthetic fluids.

What leaks ?

Keep the gaskets and seals reasonably fresh.
Fix things in a timely manner.

I know someone with a 1997 Toyota Rav4, and it was leaking oil at a MASSIVE rate till they got some gaskets replaced on the engine. Like....a quart per 100 miles leak. It only had 127,000 on it at the time, and was about 9 years old. So Japanese cars DO leak.

Why do some cars of the same model year and make leak while others do not? Are there anything one can do to avoid oil leaks?
