Auxiliary (condenser) fan for '84 300SD
Hi all,
So it seems that my condenser fan needs to be replaced. Its frame has cracked and some of the blades are rubbing the housing. It's an old thing anyway, and I've been looking for an excuse to replace it. ;-) I don't have my parts catalogue anymore... The part number on the condenser fan (aka auxiliary fan) is 000 500 48 93. I assume it's the old part number - does MB have a new part number for this item? I do believe it's 000 500 60 93, but could someone double-check for me? It looks like the Bosch replacement is around $200. I can get an aftermarket fan made by "ACM" for $122, by "SK" (apparently made in Italy or Turkey) for $84, or by "Hamburg Technic" (German OEM) for $89. Any recommendations?

Generally, I would, but the 2x price difference has me thinking...

Find a used condenser fan from the later W126. It's a much larger fan and will do a better job at cooling.
Any fan from '86-'91 will fit. Shouldn't be more than $50. I just did the same thing on the SD. |

Oh that's interesting... Since you say it's larger, will it require some modification to mount it?

Are there any tricks on how you accomplished such upgrade without any major modification?(I don't want to grind/shave the grille) I would love to have a bigger diameter fan on the AC condenser. I'm thinking about sliding/pushing the hood forward, but it might not line up the latch, and there will be a big gap between the headlights and grille if looked at the side views of the front end.

After giving it some thought, I decided to go for the ACM-made aftermarket replacement from ********AZ. I don't have time to work on mods, and I do want to get a new rather than another used part. From the info I found, ACM (German brand) is currently one of the OE suppliers for Mercedes.

if you pull a larger fan from a later model 126, it will have all the brackets you need on the fan already, and it will clear the hood because it's from the same body style #.

The bolt holes are already in place. You need the bracket and the fan from the later vehicle and it bolts right in with 6mm fasteners. |

Has anyone used a dual fan setup like the 420sel's have? I have a line on a dual fan setup and am thinking about putting this in my 86 300sdl as anupgrade to my single fan.

Why bother? The fan will almost never operate via the engine coolant switch, so it exists to keep the condenser pressures in check. Don't need a dual fan for that purpose.

I live in hot, humid NE Louisiana and I was hoping for a little more cool air out of my A/C system in stop and go traffic. My interior is dark blue leather and it absorbs the heat after sitting outside in the hot sun all day. I do use a window shade for the windshield.
On the interstate I have no problems with cold air. My car has been converted to 134A. I was thinking dual fan setup with a separate switch to turn the fans on high when in traffic. My temp gauge always runs normal so my high speed fan is never on. My aux fan does run when the A/C deems it necessary. |

Thanks for your input, perhaps I will get a separate switch and turn on my single fan when in traffic.
