Radiator removal question

Well the old Behr died of a broken neck yesterday, so I picked up a new one today. I am also changing the water pump as there is no telling how old it is. The car seems to run ~90c-95c or so all the time, hopefully with a new radiator and water pump I can get the temps down closer to ~80c- 85c. My question is this-- how much oil will I lose when I disconnect the oil cooler lines and how much tranny fluid will be lost when I remove the tranny cooler lines? Thanks.

I'm not certain about the SD, but on my 300D I did not have to remove the oil cooler, I just removed the top clamp and removed the radiator separately. I only lost a few ounces of tranny fluid.

BTW, mine ran about 5C cooler after I replaced mine (broken neck).

You don't have to take it out of the car. Just remove the two 10mm bolts that clamp the cooler to the radiator.

Thanks guys, that is what I was hoping. It looked like I could leave the oil cooler in place and just reattach it but I wasn't clear on the tranny cooler. Looks like more fun tomorrow night!!

"It's not a bad job, I did the whole thing in about an hour."

Including the water pump R&R? I think I could do the radiator in an hour but I'm afraid you got me on the water pump etc.!!

I was just talking about the radiator in an hour, but the water pump will be a lot easier with the radiator out.

LOL you guys havn't worked on a W126 have you?

On the W126 the trans cooler is built into the radiator. You need to disconnect the lines, and only lose a few drops of ATF.

FYI you really should replace the trans lines while you have them half out. They are super cheap, and are probably original and shot.

be very careful to reattach it all exactly as it should be. the cooler is fragile and if it is loose and bounces around it will be damaged in short order.

You won't lose much tranny fluid, but check level when done. Oil cooler can be separated without problems, as per earlier post. On the 123, I just loosened bolts. If your water pump is not leaking, no need to replace. How's the t'stat?

Thanks, I am replacing the water pump now since I don't know how old it is and that will be the last thing to do in that system, if I don't I know what will go out next!!!!. I replaced the T-stat last summer with the hoses and mono valve rebuild. Tranny lines will also be replaced, new belts. I need to pull the oil cooler since the fittings seem to be weaping and I want to seal them up.

Sounds like you're on your way to many trouble free miles concerning cooling.

check the fan clutch while you are in there, I think it can be refilled... not sure.
but if you want total trouble free cooling, ya better check it.
the aux fan as well.
