Find time to work on your car?

How do you find the time to work on your car? I have been so busy lately I havn't washed my car except the wheels in over two weeks. The idler pully is starting to fail, I'm going to try to get another installed before I drive up to MA this Saturday. POS aftermarket idler pully, only lasted three years. I think its a Febi, surprised. The sunroof snaps also failed, again, so I need to fix those, the headliner rattles pretty good now.

This sucks, no time to tinker on the SDL this year.

My Mercedes actually hasn't had too many problems lately, I just make time on the weekends whenever it needs an oil change.
My big project this summer is going to be the TDI's timing belt, stupid thing...why in the world didn't they use a chain?

Thumbs down

Iam retired and seem to have less time now, and I have a whole
list of things to do. maybe I need to go back to work to have more
time? that`s a sick thought.
figure you have all summer to do things and then it`s raining again.
where did the time go?

I'm off this week

Most of the work gets done while I have one these forced vacations, and no travel plans. That happens later in the summer.

What could be better? Paid week off in the bay area. With nothn' much better to do than play with the Benz. Well, till the money runs out before the projects do.

I drive during the week and play with it on the weekends. My family thinks I'm crazy when I tell them I enjoy rummaging through junkyards for my weekend fun.

I wish I had a job like that. I live on the road, in my tractor trailer, or fly to different countries, to make sales, and secure accounts. I'm only home for a few weeks of the year, total. It's a hell of a money maker, but a lot of times, I just want to ditch it all, and go home, forever. It really sucks living everywhere else, except where you live. It gets old fast, all of this traveling. No matter what side of the Globe I go to, or wherever in the country I end up, I still wish I was home. I'm so sick and tired of this right now. I'm 900 miles from the house which is, for the most part, about the closest I've been, since the first or second week of January with the exception of one 24hr period, I stopped at the house to pick up my motor-cycle, and take it out on the road with me. I'd love to get a nine to five, monday through...say Thursday, or Maybe Friday, and have the rest of the time for myself. Unfortunately though, If I did that, things would not go as well for my trucking company, drivers, or accounts. I cannot trust anyone else with so many complicated matters, and/or so much resposibilty. Realistically, I probably can, but I have a hard time convincing myself of it sometimes. All of my trucks have drivers in them, except for three at the moment. Two of which are in the body shop, and the third is a total loss. I have three Penske trucks on the road right now, and they're strippies, and junk. The truck I drive was smashed into, just the other day, and I had to pick up the rental, the yesterday morning. This thig is junk....Penske, Ryder, Edart, most of them have no options, save for A/C and air ride suspension, junk...

I should have said it's my daily driver during the week. However, I have been thinking of going to drive for Werner. They have been putting out alot of local ads for new drivers.

I know what you mean Hatt.

I cannot find the time to work on my car either. For example, I bought the solid panels for under the lamps on my car, but have not had the time to drop the panels off and have them painted. GAH!!!! I am driving around with those holes in the panels under the lamps.... Functional... Not pretty.

The paint shop that I want to use isnt open on the weekends, and I do not have the time on the weekdays to go by there.... On the other side of the city.

There are a lot of horrible trucking companies to work for out there...Werner, is at the very top of that list, along with Swift, Schneider, Navajo, a lot of others, the list is long. They are some of the worst paying companies out there. You start out grossing about $550 a week, and actually bring home a lot less than that when your done. They keep you out on the road for so long it is not funny. You almost never get home. The stupid trucks are governed for 62 miles per hour . I CAN get home, but very often simply choose not to, because of the bad memories, of my deceased Fiance' back on my home stomping grounds. I have drivers working for me bringing home $2500.oo a week, after everything, and they're home every other weekend. THATS a trucking job. You do not want to make the mistake of going to work for one of those monster companies. If you are serious about it, I can help either with advice, or a hook up of a job or something like that. Just P.M. me or something about it. I'm buying more trucks, around October. Probably 10 to 15 more atleast. I will be in need of drivers for them. I pay well, and only ask for the loads to get delivered on time, and log books "Look Legal". Aside from that, The truck is dispatched by whichever company I have the truck contracted to, and their simple rules, are the ones that come into play. There is a lot to the business. I've been in it a long time, and know a lot of the details about a lot of the industry. It is not a simple industry, despite what people may think. There is a ton more to it, than just driving the truck, even for an employee. You do not want to work for Werner though..or any of the Conglomorates, for that matter. Stick with the down home, smaller companies and make some real money.

Yes, I am a member of that site as well. I sometimes, jump back and forth from this one, to that one..

There are a few things that I don't like about that site though. For one thing, half of the drivers in the forum, cannot spell their own names, never mind regular vocab. They all talk like "Larry the Cable Guy", and know nothing about proper english. When I jump on there, I can only stay a few minutes at a time, because I feel like I'm baby sitting Romper room.

It's the same, and actually a lot worse even, on the C.B. radio which is why mine is rarely ever even turned on to begin with..

Ever heard truckers on the C.B. Radio before..? Channel #19 is the main channel, and the one everyone is on. Try it sometime, they will have you both laughing, and swearing, and calling each and every one of them a "Dumb-Ass" for some reason or another, just with their vocabulary, never mind the stuff they come up with.. Example, from this afternoon..

Q: "Anybody knowf ya cun git sick, from drinking urin..?"

A: " Yeah driver, I think ya can, but I aint so sure, call you a doctor, and find out".

Q: "Well, Hah bot if it's yer own Urin...?"

A: "Oh, well that's diffint driver, not if it's yer own."

The worst part about it is that these guys, are 100% serious in this conversation.

I almost never have my radio on, and am quite content to run without it in the truck at all. The very thought of that, is sacrelig. to most truckers.

They totally depend on the radio being in the truck and a lot of them refuse to move the truck, if the C.B. is not working or not in there. I hate that, it totally drives me up the wall.

Be careful about the advice you take from guys on that site.

Another thing is that a lot of them really think that $300.oo a week, is "Big Money". Do not be mislead, you will end up very disappointed.

I haven't yet. I haven't even done an oil change on any of my vehicles in over a year, I've brought them to our mechanic. I do have a change coming late June that should allow me some more time with fiddling around with my rides and the house. The kids' schedules over the summer are much lighter too so I hope to get some stuff done then.

I'm right there with you. The Explorer needs an oil change and some exhaust work, as well as tracking down an intermittent fuel pump circuit short. The Mercedes needs rear brakes, shifter bushings, and some finishing work in the engine compartment before it's back on the road. My wife's car's headliner is still in the basement from having it re-covered last week, and it's got a rough idle and a couple of other things on the list to check on. My motorcycle's been in the shed since a deer strike last July. I'm in the middle of putting up drywall in the basement, and leaving for two weeks of training at Camp Lejeune next week.

On the plus side, two of the three cars are at least on the road, and hopefully I'll get some of the work done this weekend. I can't wait until my wife finishes pharmacy school (in three more years) and we can at least afford to get her a decent car to cut my repair list down a bit.
