1985 300tdt getting 40mpg!!!?

What kind of fuel mileage are other 300tdt owners getting?

I am shocked. :dizzy2: I was expecting 25 - 30 mpg from reading I did prior to purchasing. I just polished off the first tank of diesel in an 18 gallon tank and got 722 miles! This is a combination of highway and local driving. I also don't drive in any special way to conserve.

Post your best mpg.

That's amazing! I was not a deisel enthusiast before, but lately I'm starting to reconsider.

Best ever?

You might want to check a few more tankfuls to get a good average. The best I have ever achieved was slightly over 40 mpg with a 190D 2.2 5-speed car, which "should" get better mileage than a 123 model wagon with a 3.0 Turbodiesel and automatic tranny.

Um, check your odometer.

EPA ratings for an 85 300TD turbo were 22-25 mph when it was new.

I've been keeping extensive records for 4 years on my federal 85 300 TD turbo and those are exactly the numbers I get (140,000-170,000 miles on the clock).

I once got 27 on all highway miles drive back from Maine (75 mph, 3 passengers plus luggage, windows up, AC off).

I would guess that unloaded and with a light foot, you might be able to get 30, but your numbers are way off for that car (unless you're selling it on E-bay).

I'd say

I'd say, check your math.

My best ever was 26.4, that was with the cruise on at 75. I drive too fast to ever see the best mileage it could do.

Rashakor 06-08-2007 09:17 AM

I would say your odometer needs a good recalibration.;)

kerry 06-08-2007 09:41 AM

I get 22-25mpg. Divide by 2.

ForcedInduction 06-08-2007 10:32 AM

Check your math and/or odometer, 40mpg from a W123 diesel isn't possible even from a brand new one straight from the factory.

Perhaps you were going all downhill?

SwampYankee 06-08-2007 10:38 AM

Best was 23, but that still had a good amount of mixed driving. I'm looking forward to a couple longer trips with it this summer to see what I can get out of it. I'm guessing 25ish.

fastpakr 06-08-2007 10:51 AM

In addition to checking your math, FORGET the size of the tank when doing calculations - it's completely meaningless. What matters is how far you drove and how much fuel you put in to fill it back up, nothing else.

I dont get that kind of millage with my 5 speed 240Ds, 36, 37 tops. Sum-ting-wong:D

best mpg

isn't the best diesel for mpg the 190D? in the low 40's.

The best I got is the first time I drove it from SC to FL, I think I was getting over 30 driving 70 mph for 500 miles. Driving averaging 55-65 I get at best 28/29, worst 24.

Chad300tdt 06-08-2007 11:21 AM

Thanks for the feedback

I didn't feel right about the mileage and suspected something was off. I will definitely check the odometer. I just bought this car and have alot to go over. Having a community of other owners to bounce things off of is great.
Thanks for the feedback.
