straight pipe question
Should it be OK to straight pipe my Merc, and ship it to the states from Hawaii. Will they flip out over emissions and whatnot?
77 300d non turbo |
the older diesels have no pollution devices in the exhaust. excepting a few years around 86 87.
none of the 123s did. so yours needs none for pollution. it will be a noisy bear though with nothing. the turbo motors are silenced to a good extent by the turbo. tom w |
I am on straight pipe, all I can say is that there has been a little gain in noise, it has turned more aggressive for sure, but the EGT also has gone down and the turbo response is way better.

A 77 is non-turbo so it's going to be EXTREMELY loud. The reason us turbo guys can get away with straight pipes is because the turbo works as a muffler through exhaust restriction and expansion.

At idle it resonates a bit, and outside during heavy acceleration you'd think a single engine plane was flying by. :D Inside its pretty much the same volume as with the exhaust system still on. On the freeway you can't tell, as the engine is loud anyways. :D ;) |
I'm still waiting for my exhaust to fall off so I can just put a 2.5" pipe out the side
