Question Hand Built ???

I just bought an 82 300TD and was told by a friend that the TD's from 79-85 were hand built. This one is near mint and it does have what looks like a tiny hand painted symbol on the back. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks

They were made on an assembly line.

I've got a picture of the TD's in the plant but I'm not at home right now to find it.

Not hand-built. Hand-assembled.

Assembly line, a very high tech one for the time period. They were painted by hand still at that point though. Computer welded, machine-press stamped uni-body. My dad worked at MB from 1981-84 when he was out of school for the summer. He was in the seat division.

By then, some of the workers on the assembly line would have been from Turkey, Yugoslavia, Albania, (Gastarbeiters, ie, guest workers) as well as Germans.

But they were really fine cars being turned out. I think well over 50% of them are still on the road.

Ah I get it.... He made the rear bench seats. (The lower portion) He said he had to make about 6-7 an hour or so, he doesn't remember the exact amount. So far neither of our rear bench seats have fallen apart. Its those guys that made the front seats......

Yep, he can still interpret what most of the stuff on the card means...and it was 20+ years ago!
