97 E300 Fuel Mileage Results

Hello everyone, Just wanted to post some results from a recent trip I took from York PA. up to New England this past Sunday to Wednesday

1st fuel stop. Sunday/Monday York Pa-Spfld, MA-Wilmington VT-and back to Spfld 594 Miles 16.98 gals. fuel. 34.98 MPG

2nd fuel stop. Tuesday eve Spfld,MA - Wilmington, VT- Spfld MA and some local running around 189 miles 5.54 gals. 34.11 MPG

3rd fuel Stop Wed-Fri Spfld, Ma - to York, PA to Balto. MD, to York, PA, and back to Balto. 589.5 miles, 16.71 gals 35.2 MPG

I am soooo pleased with the results. I didnt run the AC except on way home from for part of the trip from Spfld, MA to York, PA. Traffic on both long portions of the trip was rather light (with exception of Hartford Ct rush hour on Wed AM). I ran 70+ most parts of the trip, I tried to keep a light foot whenever possible, but sometimes you just have to go with the flow.

I get about 32 in my overall mostly-highway driving, and wouldn't be at all surprised to get 34 or better on extended highway driving.

I think you'll find that the air-conditioner makes a very small dent in the milage. Not enough to suffer.

How fast? I get those results if I drive 70-75, but I can't do that.

Half of my daily commute is above 75, the other half is above 65, except for about three or four miles total at 35 or so. The car does like to go fast, although getting there with my '96 takes some patience.

I know what you mean about that.. It was real effort not to go above 75, Parts of the trip home I was running at about 80. It seemed the backroad driving didnt hurt too much cutting up through western Mass into Southern Vt.

Those are really really good MPG's. The most I've ever gotten is 33mpg - I have yet to pull my injectors, as I know I should as it nails bad in the winter time - can't seem to find an injector shop or indy that can test the injectors prior to installing them - well, 2 weekends ago I took a trip with traveling at or above 80mph, with spurts up to 100mph, running on B20 and got 28mpg. So I guess it's not that bad. I can't resist revving the engine to redline to listen to this silky engine purrr while getting onto on-ramps and just "cleaning the pipes" around town.

I get the same mileage figures as you in the 98 E-300TD on my long New England road trips. I try to keep the speed at a steady 70mph... turn her loose when I need to just go with the flow. Run the AC in economy mode as much as possible.

Non-diesel people think your lying when you tell them what kind of mileage your getting in one of the heaviest 4 door sedans on the road......

Cheers,

It's amazing. I'm done with Italian tuneups ( wasnt doing anything but beating on a 222K motor and putting too much psi into the A/C system), and have been running some Howes Meaner Cleaner which eased the bad PC issues/smoking, and

HOLY COW!

Can I be getting near 735 miles off 21 gals of fuel!?

Combined!? ( 80% highway, and then puttering at 30 mph)

And it still has a PC issue!

Unreal man. I'm diggin; this BIG TIME!
