1982 300sd intermittent loss of power

Hello,

Has anybody experienced the following...

From cold, starts normally, drive around till its warmed up, or normal operating temp. Switch off the engine and few minutes later try to start. The engine will either crank and wont start atall or if it does start there is no power. You can floor it and it appears that the brakes are on. Turn off the engine, and re-start again, and then its normal again

This happens only occasionally.

Please advise if you have had a similar problem.

Brian

Shut off valve not fully disengaging?
Try disconnecting the shut off valve from thevacuum system. Run a long vacuum hose out thru the cowl from the shut off valve and shut if off by sucking on the hose for a few days. It should tell you if the ignition switch is sticking and failing to release all the vacuum on the shut off valve.

I put my money on the vacuum shut-off swith on the ignition. First try using a mity vac plugged into the shut-off valve on the IP. With the car running, give the mity vac a couple of pumps. It should shut right down, and hold vac, and then see if the car starts up normally. If so then the shut-off valve on the IP is good. Next try using the STOP lever in the engine bay and then try starting the car again. If she starts up again then it's in the ignition somewhere. Next try T'ing into the vac line that comes from the ignition and goes to the shut-off valve on the IP. Then start the car. The mity vac should read 0" of vac, while idling. Then shut the car down with the key. The vac should jump up then bleed back down to 0 in short order. If not then the vac shut-off valve on the ignition is bad.

Loss of power 300sd/1982

Hello,

What I have done is replaced the vacuum switch[engine cutoff] at the ignition switch. Not an easy repair though, have to remove the steering wheel, dash gauges, and the complete ign switch assembly.

It seems to have solved the problem.

The vacuum unit at the IP has quite a strong return spring, so I concluded that it was not that. I did check for vacuum on it though.

Hope that helps

Brian
