Found Possible Donor Motor

I have found an 80-300D with 170K. The transmission is dead and he is selling it as is. Has lots of other great parts and new tires. It is a non-turbo, just like I need for the 79-300CD. He wants $600 for the whole car. He claims that the moter starts readily and runs smoothly.

What do I need to check on the motor and is it a good price?

Thanks, Don

If the motor is good, I don't feel that $600 is out of the question. Before parting the car however, I would insure that the tranny is indeed toast. A little while ago, I bought a 300D with a "bad tranny"for $600. Towed it home and found it was nothing more than a seperated CV joint.........I made a boatload of money on that one

If you need an engine, its a great price, espically if there are lots of other parts. You can run the engine and if it starts easy and sounds ok, it should be fine. you could do a compression test but I would just offer him (with cash in hand) less, assuming its ok. He probably just wants it gone and if he wont take less, its still a good deal.

Thanks for the input. I just bought one of the Harbor Freight diesel compression testers. The manual does not tell me which adapter for my model....I'll figure it out.

The guy on the bad tranny, said he was seeing metal in the fluid but I'm going to chrck it out anyway.
