Jet engine in a W123

No, not really, but it sure sounds like it. Definitely the turbo, the "whoosh" starts at about 1500 RPM and it's screaming by 2500 RPM. Louder than the cylinders firing, so loud that talking to someone else in the car almost requires screaming. Apparently other turbo 617s do not sound like this. Any ideas on if there's a problem with this? The turbo seems to be working as I can feel the extra power under boost.

Bearings or impeller going bad? Not getting enough lubrication?

I can barely hear the turbo on my W210 at all, even at high RPM and full boost.

Cheers, John

Turbo noise

On the 300SD, I can only hear the turbo when the car is under load and the exhaust temps go up. In other words when the car is lightly loaded you do not hear the turbo even when it is putting out 15 psi, but go up hill and you can hear it even when it is making 6 psi. Is this the case with yours?

Check the U-Tube. Not the web site, but the BIG plastic tube that clamps between the turbo and the air filter. They can pop off, and then you will hear lots of whoosh and whine! Some pressure in that tube, of course, so you need to tighten it down quite well. That's my NOOB experiece anyway!

Your complaining!? I think most of us wish the turbo was louder...

Make sure all the connections to/from it are tight..

1) check all ducting (u-tube would fall under this category)
2) check the hard plastic line that goes from the back of the intake manifold to the ALDA
3) check to make sure the piece of hose that goes from the nipple on the compressor housing is connected to the nipple on the wastegate. If it is not connected, your wastegate isn't working and your turbo is overboosting.

I decided to have a look at the turbo to see if I could figure out the problem, if there was one. To my horror, the u-tube seems to be connected loosely- if I shake it, it moves along with the air filter assembly. To make things better, there is a visibly broken connecting line from the turbo, right around the u-tube. I took pictures... hopefully you folks can help me figure out what this is?

zooming in...

I'm assuming it's either the wastegate hose or the hose that lubes the turbo. My guess is the wastegate hose, otherwise the u-tube would be leaking oil. The u-tube not being connected also would cause the turbo not to develop full pressure, resulting in my headgasket being okay as I've run for at least 7k miles with this problem, and the P.O. probably ran for more. If it's the oil line, I'm guessing the turbo is dead... which is okay, better than a dead engine.

your wastegate pressure line seems to be broken then.. replace it asap with the proper part ( I dont have the p/n)

the line that lubes the turbo is metal and if broken your driveway would have a puddle

That's odd, on my E300 the turbo whistle is quite noticeable above 2000 RPM with the windows down. It can be heard all the way up to about 4000-5000 RPM, when the engine growl starts to overpower it. With the windows up, it's a whole 'nother story...even the engine is barely perceptible.
The TDI's VNT is audible from 1500 RPM, boy that thing whines.
