Ultimately, is nailing cause by insufficient fuel ...
or insufficiently atomized fuel in a combustion chamber? Does it cause damage it it is not resolved.

Yes, it causes damage to the piston top. Looks like someone took a icepick to it.

It is caused by a bad spray pattern... so basically insufficiently atomoized fuel (or improperly). It can definitely cause damage. If it comes out as a stream it will act like a torch. It ate through one of my prechambers that way.

It'd sure be nice if someone posted audio of nailing vs no nailing.
My car makes different noises at varying engine temps so I don't really know what is normal sounding or not.
