lost keys, now what?

i seemed to have missplaced the keys to my 240D (don't ask). now, what should i do to procure a new set as cheaply as possible?

Call the dealer. They wanted about $25 for the key for our late '83 SD.

Can't call the dealer....

....unless you have an established rappor with the parts man.

MB is getting quite picky about keys and you will need to go down in person with a registration slip to prove you own the car.

I had a guy make one from code at a key place charged me $20

I had a similiar deal when I bought a replacement ignition switch and key. I had to show the parts man at the dealership my registration. I don't have any problems with that. I would hate to think anybody could steal my car and then easily by a key of it.

You can fax the proof of ownership too. Some dealers don't even ask for it with these older cars.

let me know how you make out. I have to get keys made for the SD and all I have is a Bill of Sale:D

ayrtonsenna 06-18-2007 04:27 PM

thanks everyone... and yes i will definitely report back on the outcome

I had to provide vehicle registration. Since I had it on me I didn't try and BS my way around it but I reckon they're sticklers for this seeing that you can read a VIN right through the windshield...bill of sale if you mean title with the back signed then that would probably work...piece of paper with signature..a little less so for obvious reasons.

I have an unsigned title........owner abandon the car more than a yr and a half ago but left the title behind

I have a bill of sale from the owner of the property where car was left.

Can't I just get a locksmith to come out and make up keys????

I don't know if a locksmith has the proper tool for the type of key. You say you have an "unsigned title"??? I'm sure the PO will "sign" the title prior to you going to the DMV so you can register it.... right?!?!?

Besides, there is nothing like the feeling that all I had to do was show the registration, the parts guy copied the VIN and two days later two PERFECT WORKING keys were delivered to the dealer. SO now the "original" key is the spare and my son and I have new ones on the key chains. BTW they were $20 each! That was after a quote over the phone from a Boston dealer of $80 each. It paid to deal with the local guy!
