Question Why won't my engine turn over by hand?

Good evening,

I have not started the car in two weeks as it has underwent all sorts of surgery. Just reinstalled injectors as well. Now I am set up to do IP timing using the drip tube. I follow the FSM instructions etc. Note I have not started the car at all, just gone right to the IP timing procedure.

Go to turn the engine over by the PS pump and I cant move it at all. The belt slips before it will turn the engine over. I even tightened the belt some.

Does this mean I need to crank the starter over a bit since the engine hasnt run in a couple weeks? Am I forgetting something stupid?

AND...How do I crank it from the crank bolt? I cant see how to get the socket in there to do it the 'right' way.

Thanks,
dd

Craftsman 27mm deep socket and 1/2" ratchet will fit on the crank without any modifications to the tools or car.

Isnt this only true on a manual? I had it in P.

So, I should be able to turn the car over at the crank even though it hasnt been started in a couple weeks?

Yes you should be able to turn it at the crank no matter how long it's been sitting. It is a little tough to get past the compression stroke.
If your really having that mouch trouble remove either the injectors or the glow plugs.

Use the 27mm deep socket for injectors. I am usually able to slip it over the crank bolt from underneath.

Don't forget to take the wrench OFF when you are done turning the motor. Don't ask....

Paul, did you find using the crank bolt was good enough for trying to test/set pump timing?

THIS IS WRONG!
P or N or for that matter any gear in an automatic transmission would work for turning over the motor.
P keeps the car from moving by locking the drive shaft, it is no different from N other than that.

Really? So what was up the other day when I was spinning my torque converter to get to the drain plug and the engine was turning with it?

And, how would one be able to push (or pull) start one of our cars if what you say is true?

It is my understanding, from what I've read here, that our trannys are different than most other automatics

Not trying to be argumentative, just trying to understand.
