Removing the Fuel Sender Unit

Hey All - first post here but am always browsing the forums, really appreciate the insights...

My question is regarding removing the fuel sender in an '85 123. I tried the channel lock solution, but there was no way that nut was going to budge.

For those of you who were able to remove it, was it this difficult?

Any suggestions? I live in a pretty hot area, so i'm thinking that everything sort of started to fuse together (and the fact that it probably hasn't been removed in 22 years doesn't help).

Thanks!!!
