Brake Pads: Thick or Thin?

I just noticed that some brands of brake pads for the W123 come in a thick version and a thin version.

What is the advantage of the thin version?

they fit? the thick versions usually are for a different car, and they need to be modified to fit a proper thickness rotor. perhaps the thicker ones work on marginal thickness rotors... but I don't have any rotors in that condition.

A "live chat" with the vendor suggests that my car uses the thick version. Maybe there is a difference between ATE and Bendix calipers. (Mine are ATE.)

You must be referring to the front pads and caliper types because it seems that the rear pads are of only one type to choose from.... correct?

I was looking at front pads. With reference to rear pads, I don't know if they are offered in more than one thickness.

I've never heard this one before. I've bought front pads on a few occasions and never once was I asked if I needed thick or thin.

Look at the different options for Mintex, Textar and OE. (The search was for a 1982 300D.)

This particular vendor's website has some bizarre quirks, so what you see today might not be the same tomorrow!!!

I've always bought ATE pads so I guess I was oblivious to the different thicknesses.
