1980 300SD on EBAY # 250132109030

Was wondering what the opinions were of this car. I thought it was pretty interesting.

Jump on it!

I'd be all over it if it was in Colorado.

Could be good. I wouldn't risk it without checking out in person, though...

It might be like that time capsule Plymouth they dug up in Tulsa

http://www.buriedcar.com/photo_galleries/june_15th_unveiling/main.htm

I would not throw good tires on it and roll it to VA. Get it on a trailer. And it's gonna be difficult enough rolling it onto a trailer if the wheels haven't turned for 10 years.

I can't imagine the smell that'll greet you when you open the doors.

How long and through how many summers/winters has the car sat outside? Low mileage or not, the elements can kill a car.

well for a car that is "has not been stripped in any way" it is missing the rear window trim on the passenger's side... NY is not a forgiving place to leave a car outside for years..... 666.00 current bid with less than a day to go... anybody in NYC wanna go look at it?

Its hard to tell without seeing it better but there is a chance that oxidation could polish right out and you could really bring it back... Although sitting that long in NY it could be all rusted underneath or had water seeping inside, etc..

If the car has not been driven in 10+ years, its going to need so much work done to it, even more so then the higher millage ones we have here. everything is probably dry-rotted and needs replacement..

To much work for my plate, i suppose it could make a nice couple year project... but coming from the Northeast... watch out

Ive emailed this guy and asked some questions. He just emailed me this that he sent to others who had asked questions about the car:

"A Mercedes mechanic was here yesterday to look at the car for himself. He asked if it was OK to examine the engine and trans. I let him do this because he seemed very knowledgeable in this car and engine. He did get the car started with ease when he placed a battery in it. He said car was idling fine, glow plugs working, thermostat working, water pump working, engine oil at proper level, coolant at proper level, and transmission did engage properly although we did not try to move car. He was satisfied with what he saw. He did not make an offer to buy at this time because he needs to talk to his partner. I was not looking for an offer because I want the auction to run it's course. 1000 people have hit the ebay selling page, and I can't count how many phone calls I've received. When I received your email asking to try to start the car I was reluctant due to not being that knowledgeable with this engine. Good Luck"

Sitting for 10 years and then just suddenly starting it can't be good for the rings. I'd at least have pulled the injectors and let a few doses of MMO soak in before any starting attempts.

Sitting for 15 years like that in Florida would reduce it to junk. New York- maybe OK with that low mileage.

If he's basically saying that the engine runs (in writing) and you are prepared to go and verify that after winning the auction it may not be a bad deal for low money. Otherwise , too risky, IMO
