500D - Super Diesel

I would like to mate the 500E (w124 platform) flared body with a 99 turbo diesel motor or a 2005 e320 cdi motor. Has this ever been done before? I think the 500e with flared body is one of the best looking benzes ever made and I believe turbo diesel is way better than gas so put the two together and you a 500D Super Turbo Diesel. It just hit me on the way to work this morning.

Where are those lotto tickets?

Need
High mileage 500e with blown engine
Totaled 99 or 05 turbo diesel
Skilled diesel builder

I wonder if this has been done in europe?

Any insight or thoughts on this benz conversion.

Thanks,

roane3

I like

Just check the legality in your state of converting gas car to diesel. It shouldn't be a problem since it would be a newer engine, but some states can be a real PITA. CT comes to mind

Other than that, it's just $$$.

i dont know i love the M119, the 500E is rare enough that it should be restored or modded with its original parts. Remember this was a car that was handbuilt by porsche, would you really want to mess with its history by putting a diesel in it?

But hey if you got the money do whatever youd like, but there were a limited number of cars that were imported to the US. Just over 1K if i remember correctly, so youll have a tough time looking for one with a bad motor. Id think youd be better off modding a 87 with a 603 motor and just adding the sport suspension and flared fenders.

I would leave that Porsche-built 500E the way it is...when Porsche and Mercedes come together, the metric gods tend to have their way...and you won't wanna mess with them

Other than that, you will run into computer issues if you try to adapt the 606.962 (engine from '98-99 E300 turbo) to a W124 chassis, i.e. the 500E. The engines in W210 E-classes are electronically-controlled, while those systems in W124 E-classes are mechanical. You would get into injection pump swaps, modifying the 500E chassis and driveline for a diesel engine, screwing with the computers in the 500E...the list goes on....
I would think that a CDI is out of the question.....

IMHO, you're better off just buying an E300 turbo and having the same engine, a better transmission (5spd vs. 4spd), and a more modern chassis. You could even find the lower body parts from an E55 AMG if you wanted a sporty-looking car... AND, E300s like chips.
Just my 2¢.

They make (or at least used to make) an E400 CDI for the European market...it's a V8 diesel. There's a video on youtube somewhere. From what I remember it sounded pretty sweet and wasn't a slowpoke either. It would have made our E300DT's look like 240D's

Just saw one of those 500's for sale down the road.. ( which is unusual around here to see any MBz for sale) Very neat body.

Methinks the only diesel I'd care to swap in is a Cummins, not a MBz though. Or one of those "EuroDiesels" inthe youtube vid. Big car.

roane3,

When you do settle on a combination, there's a diesel conversion shop near the fairgrounds that's done some shhweeet conversions on late model Ford pickups. The name escapes me right now but they were so nice, I was tempted to go ask for a job there!
