SLS expert advice needed

I wrote last week about a high pressure SLS hose failure while on a roadtrip. Cutting off the end and reattaching the fitting got me home. I'm now replacing the hose myself. Two shops said they could not reuse the fittings so I bought the hose and am putting the fittings on the new hose.

HOWEVER--- when I took one fitting off and raised up the other end of the hose, 25 SMALL PLASTIC INSERTS FELL OUT OF THE HOSE!! What are these things? Nobody mentioned them when they discussed replacing their hoses. They fell on a dirty floor so I'll have to clean them before reinstalling them in the new hose but I sure would like to know what they are before putting the second fitting on the hose with these things inside. In addition, does anyone know for sure which way to install them. One end is castellated and flared and the bottom of another one fits inside it.

Also, what is the best liquid in which to clean them?

It might be part of how MB clamped the hose. Kind of like a trapping mechanism to keep the hose from backing off.

I don't think they had anything to do with the clamping. They completely filled the hose from end to end. I reinstalled them in the new hose but I still don't know their purpose. I'm quite surprised that nobody has mentioned them on this board since I know a number of people have replaced this hose on their TD. I bet the shops that built the new hoses just said nothing about them.

I do not have SLS, but I do not ever recall seeing plastic used on high pressure hydraulic lines. Could it be a PO's prior repair that failed?

I will be taking apart my sls hose soon, due to leakage... I will post what I find in there.

I don't see how the inserts could have performed any repair function. They could serve two possible purposes that I can detect. They might stop the hose from kinking. (each one is about an inch and a quarter long). They might serve as a flow limiting feature, restricting the inside diameter of the hose. They are held in place by the fittings at the end of the hose.

Makes sense, and since the plastic is supported by the hose, pressure wise, they should not crumble or break. It is possible that no one mentioned it because they did not have a hose break in two, or try to reclaim the fittings from the old one.

I helped a friend recently to replace that hose on his '92TE. There was nothing inside the hose. What do these things look like? Can you post a pic?

I put them all back in already and reassembled the hose. I should have taken a picture before I did that. They were clear plastic about an inch and a quarter long, hollow, with the ends shaped like plastic electrical conduit so that one fit inside the next. The largest diameter was exactly the internal diameter of the hose so they slide inside the hose snugly. There was a small slot in the side of the smaller end where it fit inside the larger end of the adjoining one.
