Climate Control in the W124 (87)

In my 87 300d I see the PO installed a toggle switch to control the fan and no matter where I put the little wheel on the left I get hot air from the system. seems to switch where I can put the air ok but the fan and temp control do not work. I've thought of just purchasing the ccu (link below)

are there tests I can run to figure out what my problem is?

I think I remember a member here selling a CCU for your car. I think he bought it and didn't need it. I would do a search here first. I believe it was in the last 2 weeks.
